 Understanding Gerunds


Today, I learned an interesting lesson in my English class about gerunds. A gerund is the -ing form of a verb that functions as a noun in a sentence.


Examples of gerunds :

Talking  ,  Cooking  ,  Walking  ,  Painting  ,  Eating


Ways to use gerunds in sentences


Gerunds as Subjects :

- Reading is my favorite hobby.

- Not eating at restaurants saves money.

- Walking in the park is good exercise.


Gerunds as Objects :

- I love running.

- She considered not going.

- We enjoy baking cookies.


Gerunds after Prepositions :

- I manage it by working much longer than 19-hour weeks.

- In spite of studying a lot he didn't pass the exams.

- He told the joke without laughing.


Gerunds in Compound Nouns :

- I saved up so I'd have spending money for a diamond ring.

- Desire is the starting point of all achievement.

Note : Gerunds are not the same as present participles, which are used in continuous tenses.


Conversation 1:

Pinmook : Hi , Alpha! What do you enjoy doing in your free time?

Alpha : I love to reading a book. Listening to music is also one of my favorite hobbies. What about you?

Pinmook : I really enjoy playing piano.baking cookies is also something I like.

Alpha : That sounds interesting! Have you ever thought about publishing how to bake it?

Pinmook : Yes! I'm interested in sharing my stories on instagram , but I'm still nervous about showing my work to others.

Alpha : Don't worry! Getting feedback from readers will help you improve.

John : Hey, Sarah! I heard you’ve started paintingrecently. How is it going?

Sarah : It’s amazing! Painting helps me relax after work. What about you?

John : I’ve been enjoying jogging in the mornings. It’s refreshing.

Sarah : That sounds great! I’ve always loved jogging, too. Do you listen to music while jogging?

John : Sometimes, but I prefer listening to podcasts. Learning new things while exercising is fun.

Sarah : I agree! Learning keeps the mind sharp. Have you tried cooking new recipes lately?

John : Yes! Cooking is my new passion. It’s so rewardingto create delicious meals.

Sarah : That’s wonderful! I think cooking and paintingmake life more colorful, don’t you?
